Mack is the son of Andrew Hortford. He became the Red Ranger when his father was blindsided by a surprise attack by Lava Lizards while attempting to morph into the Red Overdrive Ranger. Mack took the Overdrive Tracker his father dropped and performed the sequence to morph into the Red Ranger. Before becoming the Red Ranger, he had spent his whole life stuck in his father's mansion while his father went off on adventures. One of the things Mack did to imagine himself on those same adventures his father went on was reading adventure novels in his spare time.
When Mack's father began assembling the Operation Overdrive team he was originally left out and wasn't even allowed to witness the first meeting, having to listen to it through an air vent. Only when Moltor's army attacked the Hortford mansion was Mack allowed to get into the action and he never looked back. His father though had other ideas and took back the Red Overdrive Tracker and locked it in his safe. Mack eventually got it back with the help of Will after his father got kidnapped and from that point on, along with the encouragement of his fellow Rangers, his father accepted him as the Red Overdrive Ranger, although his father told him he will always worry for him.
Although he looks your typical adolescent Mack posesses the leadership skills necessary to lead the Operation Overdrive team. When his fellow Rangers had their Zords stuck in a snow storm he overcame his own doubts and fears to operate the Drill Driver. He sucessfully converted Will in "The Underwater World", who at that point portrayed himself as someone who worked alone, to become a team player. When Flurious and Moltor captured the Drivemax Megazord, he stayed with it and was imprisioned by the two brothers in order to eventually bring it back to their side. He skillfully used Norg to turn Moltor and Flurious against each other to create a distraction for his escape. When Tyzonne first appeared he was the only one who saw the good in him when his fellow Rangers thought he was just another one of Moltor's goons. He successfully rescued him from destruction by Moltor and eventually helped him become human again.
