Dr. Anton Mercer and Dr. Tommy Oliver used to work together on dinosaur and fossil experiments, until one day, someone or something attacked their lab and destroyed much of their work. Dr. Oliver presumed Dr. Mercer was gone after their island was destroyed, but it was not the case as Dr. Mercer's name appeared outside the Reefside's museum doors and his actual appearance in "Diva in Distress".

Dr. Mercer worked with Trent Hernandez's parents. One day, they became trapped in a cave during an experiment and Trent's parents never got out. Dr. Mercer adopted Trent and raised him on his own, giving him whatever he needs, although some of the choices Dr. Mercer makes for his son he doesn't want. He is grooming Trent so that the day when he replaces him, he will be prepared.

He appears to be a self-reserved man who secretly has something against Dr. Oliver, as he doesn't want his son Trent around him. He is also a very proud man, and doesn't want to see his son "Trent" waiting tables. He tried to buy the land Hayley's Cyberspace was on so he could make it so Trent could be the manager, but Trent foiled his own father's plans. Dr. Mercer claims he's doing what's best for his son.
