LOOKING AT THE FINALE OF DINO THUNDER
Posted by TimJohnson on

Sigh, what I feared the finale to be last week came to life this morning. The episode was okay, but the elements were no way to end a series, and you could tell there were plenty of recycled elements from past series finales. The finale in my opinion symbolized the whole production of this Dino Thunder series, EVERYTHING was rushed. This series had more potential but for whatever reason they slugged through getting across the storyline. The writing of the show really took the ball and fell down a steep hill with this series. At the end of a series, you want the viewers to wish the series WAS NOT over. They did NOTHING to get the characters over and make us feel passionate about them and never had them struggle through any hardships like in past seasons. I'll write about the entire series tommorow in the weekly newsletter; there were some very good spots in the series, but I don't think this will be a series to remember.
ON TARGET
To be honest, everything was predictable. On that note, at least Zeltrax made an appearance and tried to make in impact.
It's nice Tommy Oliver is going to live "the quiet life" after all he's been through. I just wish he was used a lot better in the series.
Cassidy handing over the tape to the Rangers was a nice touch, even if it did seem so sudden, although it may have upset fans who for the entire series wanted her to find the identify of the Rangers and become famous. It was also nice to have Devin be the one to tell Cassidy not to use it.
It's nice they had the prom and all the main characters were together and went on with their lives. Everyone looked nice (except Conner's hair).
OFF TARGET
Oh great, the Rangers spent a lot of time in Dr. Oliver's basement and soon find it's destroyed. No sense of shock or anything. Conner just stood there and probably was like, "Who cares". I felt the same way, it's been done in EVERY finale.
This was the most rushed episode of Power Rangers I may ever watch. They crammed so much into one episode that the viewer can't get a chance to emotionally attach themselves to the storyline. The Zord battle with Zeltrax could have meant so much more. They hinted at a Mesogog transformation back when he had the White Dino Gem, but they never followed up on that. They gave about 20 seconds for the Rangers' reactions to the destruction of the Dino Zords.
The battle with Zeltrax just ended like any other battle, with him losing, but at least this time he didn't escape. They really missed the boat with that villain.
There were lots of recycled elements from past finales which was just so predicatble for long time Ranger fans. The destruction of the Zords by self-destructing (Turbo), losing their powers after using them to defeat an enemy (Ninja Storm), combining their powers to defeat the enemy (Ninja Storm), clip show at the end (Wild Force, although it was more of a "What happened after" scene).
After the Megazords were destroyed, they should have just shown Ethan and Conner flying out because no one didn't think they would survive. Worse, they only showed Kira showing any emotion in wondering if they surprised, while everyone else just said one word. Tommy saying, "Guys!"?
This "losing your powers" at the end of a series is a good way to signify the end of a series, but the way it was done just left me saying to myself, "Who freaking cares?" I don't think I even would have been wondering about it even if they didn't mention that.
They missed the boat big time with the Mesogog battle. First of all, they didn't need him to transform, because his second form was just laughable. Second, everything was so rushed that you never could get the sense of, "When are they going to get the final strike?" The Rangers threw a lot at Mesogog, but I never had any doubt the Rangers would win, which is really bad for a series finale. Worse, they did the whole combining of powers which is just so lame. At least give the kids who have Dino Ranger toys some satisfaction that it was their weapon that defeated Mesogog. How can Bandai sell that product? Even worse, instead of celebrating after defeating the enemy that they have been fighting forever, they worry about their powers being gone?
STUFF TO THINK ABOUT
For a destruction of a headquarters, the Rangers and Hayley sure looked like they didn't care it was destroyed.
Why didn't Zeltrax just destroy the rest of Dr. Oliver's home since he hates him so much?
Wow, they mentioned Smitty!
The Elsa and Zeltrax talk sure did a lot. Wasn't Elsa right when she told Zeltrax, "You can't defeat the Power Rangers!"
Who was working Hayley's Cyberspace when Devin and Cassidy were meeting, since Hayley was gone?
Wasn't it nice that the girl saved Ethan's palce in line?
When you saw the invisiportal in the sky, weren't you thinking of Time Force's finale?
Couldn't the "Zelzord" be any more goofy looking?
Wasn't the mountain range blowing up a really cool video effect?
Isn't it nice that Trent is relegated to fighting Triptoids in the finale, then again when he takes Elsa to safety while Kira and Dr. Oliver fight Zeltrax?
When all the Dino Zords were together firing at the Zelzord, weren't you thinking of Wild Force and wondering if more undiscovered Dino Zords would come down and help?
Why did Tommy yell out, "Guys!" after the Zords were self-destructed?
Is there bigger news in Reefside City? Why was there no press for this?
Isn't it nice that for a finale, no cars were damaged during the filming process?
The only shocking thing to me the whole episode was Cassidy deciding not to give up the identify of the Power Rangers.
So did Cassidy lose her job at the TV station?
Wow, Cassidy sure did look nice at the prom!
Doesn't Ethan have a lot of guts standing in the middle of the room playing his portable video game?
Did you notice Ethan had his ear pierced?
Did Conner claim that, "It's what's on the inside that counts", because he couldn't find anyone else?
Did Conner have the worst looking hairdo ever?
What the heck was Dr. Oliver talking about when he said, "We've been through alot, more than any other school has to go through", because what the heck happened at that school besides him and Elsa fighting?
Was anyone hoping the band would be someone OTHER than Kira?
Did they HAVE to use a clip show at the end?
Did anyone remember that Trent did art?
Wasn't it glad

[cover story] Why I feel the Dino Thunder finale is lacking, a LOT
For the past few years for a final episode of a Ranger series, it's usually the same old story. The Rangers' base gets trashed, lots of fighting, lots of explosions, villain fights the Rangers, and the Rangers triumph in the end. I feel this year's finale is a tad bit different. Usually when you have a finale, the heroes always have their backs against the wall, not the other way around. Last Saturday's episode proved that. There were plenty of storylines that could have been saved for Part II. Instead, the episode ended with Zeltrax taking Elsa out. Problems here. Does anyone care?
Up to that point, Elsa has been portrayed as an evil villianess who had her own agenda opposite of Mesogog's. Even when she was Principal Randall, she was still portrayed as "evil". So why should viewers care about her? What is Zeltrax going to do to her, tie her up in the warehouse again? Sure, she has became good as a result of Mesogog draining her energy, but the transition was all too sudden and definitely got lost in the shuffle of the finale. It could have been written as a separate episode. The "good" Elsa did nothing for the episode, and I'm quite surprised how the Rangers didn't hesitate at all to help her when they just bashed & questioned Trent before when they knew he was on their side. They should have ended the episode with Trent and his Dad trying to escape, which at least could have made viewers want to see if they could escape since they probably care more about that then Elsa.
The shooting down of Mesogog's laser was far too easy and looked like it could have been an episode early on in the series. Yeah, Hayley made a nice looking truck, but I felt that this scene could have been used for any ordinary episode and wasn't special at all, which brings me to my next point.
Series finales usually are the buildups to storylines built up all year. Here, nothing was built up, except maybe Mesogog finally fighting the Rangers, but they did nothing to even build that up. I see Mesogog as the guy who just sends monsters and gets angry at his generals. And why does Zeltrax pop out of nowhere? Personally for me, I see Zeltrax as the warrior who cowardly ran away from a gazillion fights from Tommy early on in the series. If they wanted to make Zeltrax a tough villain at the end, they should have written in more for his character. Even at the first episode of the finale he was nearly defeated.
In Power Rangers In Space, you had Darkonda unleash his plan on Dark Specter and Astronema to try and take them out, with buildup from the second season of that series. With Time Force, Frax was eliminated and Ransik became a lunatic bound to destroy the Power Rangers. If you were a casual viewer of this series, could you have noticed that this episode was the finale? Gosh I hope the second episode has more impact. Not that the last episode was bad, but it was not worthy of a finale from past episodes. It's a darn shame because Doug Sloan did a good job in the episodes he wrote during Zeo on keeping the suspense level up with bringing Jason into the series and the nice finale at the end with Jason and Tommy talking to each other. Who knows, maybe Dino Thunder will end with a bang! (For reference I didn't mean a big explosion that takes place during the episode)

The series finale of Dino Thunder is this Saturday.
Matt Hawkins, a comic book writer from Top Cow, has said he has written two episodes of "the new Power Rangers series airing on ABC FAMILY." It's just a little blurb on the Comics Continuum site. To see it you have to scroll down (after viewing the NICE pictures of Jennifer Garner in the "Elektra" movie info.
There are already signs of SPD promos on ABC FAMILY.
Co-webmaster of this site (who has been slacking on his duties the past month, j/k tp) tpwiz4 is auctioning off some of his Power Ranger Megazords and weapons, which are located HERE. The items are, Deluxe Lightspeed Megazord, Deluxe Rescue Bird, Deluxe Centaurus Megazord, Deluxe Max Solarzord, and Deluxe INTERACT Megazord.
Rhett Fisher (Ryan Mitchell in Lightspeed Rescue) is in an independent film, "Cup 'O Joe". It's an industry screening so I don't believe it's available for public viewing. The screening takes place in Culver Studios/INCE Theater in Culver City, CA. Rhett's Power Rangers credits are "Power Rangers Time Force" and "Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue: The Queen's Wrath" (home video release of three Lightspeed Rescue videos).
Interesting news note, JC Penney celebrated their 10 year anniversary of selling online in 1994, which they say concided with Power Rangers (not the case). They say the first item they had available was a Power Rangers Action Figures set which included the "rare" White Ranger for $24.99. Wonder how much shipping was. You can view the whole press release HERE.
I don't know if this goes here but here's an article from "The Daily Northwestern" about a man named Stephen Schaffer which says he got a job as a production assistant for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers through his sister.
If you live on the Virgin Islands, Quality Family Entertainment will hold "Spider-Man in Paradise" at Antilles School on November 27 and 28th. "The Power Rangers will display martial arts techniques" it says. For more information, click here.
EPISODE REVIEW: #37 THUNDER STRUCK, PART I
Posted by TimJohnson on
November 14, 2004 @ 5:29 AM
I felt this episode was much better than the previous one, not just because it was part one of a finale. It had some good moments and if it had the proper buildup from last episode, could have been more hype going in.
ON TARGET
Tommy was portrayed a little better in this episode. There were some spots where I felt asking myself, "What is he doing?" like with Trent asking for the "real" Dino Gems and just saying, "It's not going to work", but otherwise, more use of his experience and talents. I liked how he trusted Trent to come out on his own instead of making the whole team wait.
Conner didn't do any of his "ticked off" spots when they found the human Elsa. It's just a "yawner" when you look at him speak up because you don't get the sense he is the leader of the group.
I feel kind of glad that Devin and Cassidy (or Devin rather) found out who the Power Rangers were, because they achieved their quest that they started off some episodes back, and rewards for watching the series.
Trent acted pretty good in the episode confronting Mesogog, and I'm glad they added the line about trusting Mesogog to return his father, but for some reason he ended up falling for it. They could have just given him fake Dino Gems since Mesogog never bothered to check if they were authentic.
OFF TARGET
I don't know about you but I'm tired of seeing every series have the command center blown up or destroyed. It's happened since Turbo (In Space was Angel Grove but I'll put it with the other series) and although it's implementing that it's the end, doesn't always need to happen to make the last episodes feel like a finale.
It's nice to see Zeltrax become dominant (except at the end where he escaped for the billionth time from battle), but I just went "eh" went he reappeared because of how he was portrayed earlier in the series, getting his butt whooped every episode by Tommy.
STUFF TO THINK ABOUT
Who is the new principal at Reefside High School?
After seeing last episode about the Ranger teens "changing" after becoming Rangers, did they really change at all?
So is Ethan going to get his spot back in line for the movie?
If Conner has three lists of "girls" to take to the prom, how come we've barely seen him with girls all series?
Why didn't Tommy play the footage from season one of Power Rangers when the Rangers gave their Power Coins to Goldar and didn't get their powers back?
Since when did Mesogog's island have a dirt path road?
Did you notice the promo for the next episode during the last commercial break WITH Trent morphing with the Rangers, that was before we knew if he survived?
Were you suprised when Ethan said that Trent would fall from the sky, when he didn't?

EPISODE REVIEW: #36 A TEST OF TRUST
Posted by TimJohnson on
November 11, 2004 @ 11:47 PM
Well, seems each year they always have to have a "review" episode to recap the entire season, and they had one for this episode, the LAST episode before the finale. Who knows why, but at least they bothered to connect it to the storyline somehow (I'll never get out of my mind Leo and Damon being tied in the middle of a desert talking about previous events). This episode was just plain bad in my opinion, and I really do mean that. They need to sell for the finale. What do we have going into it? Mesogog vs. Trent?
ON TARGET
For whatever reason they decided the episode before the finale had to be a recap episode, they did a good job of blending it in with the current storyline.
OFF TARGET
What did Trent have to do to prove himself to the team? It's not like he hasn't been fighting with them the past few episodes, so how does that change anything? He saves them in the end, big deal! The other Rangers (including Dr. Oliver) make it seem like he hasn't done squat for a long time. Ugly writing.
Why is Conner trying to be the tough guy? I've never seen a Ranger leader act the way he does, all stuck up. Why does Trent need to get his respect for the way he treats him?
The clips themselves served no purpose and to add to that, the Rangers really haven't changed 180. Kira still does her singing, Ethan still plays his games, and Conner still plays and loves soccer. What did those clips of them have to do with anything? This episode was clearly rushed.
Tommy Oliver is going to be remembered as "one of them", meaning, the Dino Rangers as inexperienced and un-cunning. The Tommy Oliver from Power Rangers Turbo and back would have calmed this situation with Trent and thought it out, not jumping to conclusions. He just "went along" with it and didn't even bother to think about anything until Trent told his story. Come to think of it, he was supposed to be a "mentor" to the Rangers, instead, he's just sat back and soaked everything in. I was very shocked he didn't say anything after Conner went on his "rant".
What was the point of the Megazord battle? I don't know either.
Conner acted like Trent wouldn't save him when pretty much every viewer knew he would. Note to the writers, if you want to do that, you might want to put write in some scenes for Trent that would make the viewer unsure that he was with the Rangers, like disappearing maybe?
I could go on more but I'm just disgusted with the episode, more so because of the lack of hype for the finale.
STUFF TO THINK ABOUT
Since Conner fell from space towards "Japan", did he stop to greet the "Japanese actors" portraying their show?
1RANGER WEEKLY UPDATE

November 9, 2004 @ 12:47 AM
Sorry this is late. We had server problems.
[cover story] Why Disney needs to stop hiring a new cast every year
The Dino Thunder finale is set to start next week, and that means it's the last episodes we will ever see the Dino Thunder cast (not including if there's a teamup next year).
When Saban started changing the cast yearly after Power Rangers in Space, it was unique. A fresh start made things interesting, old rules were thrown out and a new world of Power Rangers was opened. Now it just has become cluttered. Do The Simpsons move to another city each season? Did Friends change its setting? This show is marketed towards children, and children are specific to characters and heroes. Does Marvel created a new Spiderman everyear? Clearly, you can't have the same actors as the Power Rangers for a long period of time, but to change them every year gets tedious and puts a lot on the production staff to get accustomed to a new workers and write storylines. I know this is a kid's show, but you have to have some sort of consistency for a period of time, not one season. I suggest two max, because you don't get rushed storylines and rushed development. It's so you don't have a new Wild Zord being introduced every episode like in Power Rangers Wild Force, or a new weapon in every episode like in Lightspeed Rescue.
For character development, by the end of the first season of PR, you could clearly tell each person's character. Jason had the leadership characteristics, Zach had a charismatic personality, Billy acted like a "dork" but was very helpful to the theme, Trini brought wisdom to the group, Kimberly brought energy to the group, and Tommy was the guy who could handle everything and was always there for his friends when they needed him. Now, we get weak character developement with some Rangers and way too strong with others. Take for example, Time Force. Wes got a HUGE push in his character development, with his father, Jen, Eric, and Alex. Jen got a nice development with Alex and Ransik. Eric in a way was nicely characterized too. What about Lucas? The only thing I can remember off the top of my head was he raced cars. His personality never got to show. What about Katie? She could lift strong things. In the Wild Force/Time Force teamup, she got ONE line at the end of the 2nd episode by responding, "OK" to Trip's request to finish Danny Delgado off in an arm wrestling contest. Trip could have been a cooler character, but he was always stuck with Circuit. He got a few episodes with him in the spotlight, but they didn't amount to much of his importance.
When Power Rangers Turbo ended, the last image before rolling to the credits was the NASADA Space Shuttle with the four Turbo Rangers in it, with the text, "To be continued next season...Power Rangers in Space". I remember anticipating the series premiere of Power Rangers in Space for 3 long months, and the premiere didn't disappoint. Premieres after Power Rangers In Space weren't awful, but didn't have the same affect as Space's because there was no buildup. Sure, they were promoted through promos, but none had the storyline implication of Space's premiere.
With the production move to New Zealand, Disney saved money. What have they been doing with this money? Heck do I know, but I'm sure it's not much more to rehire the current cast for a second season than to go through hiring an entire new cast. This isn't Survivor here. With Dekaranger (series in Japan to become Power Rangers SPD) having 10 Rangers so far, Disney has their work cut out for them (if they choose to have 10 Rangers). Had they kept this year's cast, their task would be somewhat easier, just addon.
Well, we will be seeing a new cast next year. But imagine a child talking about when he's talking about the Power Rangers. Instead of saying, "Blue is my favorite Power Ranger", he could say, "Ethan is my Power Ranger" (exaggeration), because he will actually be able to remember his name and not have 10 names stuck in his head. I guess it's whatever Disney wants to do, since they paid billions of dollars for the franchise.

I'll have the summary of "A Test of Trust" up tommorow. I was out of town so I didn't get a chance to do it. I'm very looking forward to the Rangers' reactions to Trent. If you read my review of "House of Cards", you'll see why.
In the spirit of the presidential election, ABC FAMILY has decided that instead of voting for several episodes, you can vote for EVERY series in Power Rangers up to Dino Thunder. You can vote for "Best Power Ranger series" here. This doesn't include Alien Rangers in its own separate catergory. The series that wins will air on November 14th. What episodes from each series is unknown to this point. What's interesting is that this poll was originally supposed to be the best episodes from each series, but ABC FAMILY realized doing a flash poll with that many choices is chaos, so they changed it to narrowing it down.

[cover story] 10 Best Dressed Rangers
Last week, I had my picks for the 10 WORST Ranger dressers, now I present you with my 10 BEST. I know I left out the Alien Rangers last week, and to be honest, I totally forgot. Feel free to throw tomatoes and other vegetables at me. But do that after you read the 10 I chose. As a male, I did the best I could to stop myself from putting 10 females on the list.
10. Joel - Gotta love the cowboy suit. The hat is what got him on the list though.
9. Jen - Her outfit sure did conceal her identity from being from the future alright!
8. Eric - The Silver Guardians uniform looked slick and showed people that he was no ordinary police force. The red hat he got for being later added to his coolness.
7. Lucas - I liked his "cool" look. The black dress shirt and blue undershirt looked pretty sweet, along with the black pants. The geled hair was also a bonus. Wonder how long it took him to do that every morning up in the attic.
6. Kim - What I call the first lady of Power Rangers (if there can be one), Kimberly always looked nice and her clothing reflected her beauty and gracefulness. Except when she dressed like a punk for that one episode.
5. Dana - Got to love the blouse, skirt, and boots. Perfect for nursing injured victims.
4. Ashley - Whatever she wore, always looked good on her. Maybe it was the hair.
3. Wes - The richest Ranger we will probably ever see, the business look was pretty slick. Pretty funny to think at times when he wore that worker's outfit, when he picked up trash and painted those walls.
2. Kat - If you want to talk about gracefulness, this Australian can warm anybody's hearts (not just males here). The dresses she wore always looked right on her. I only became squemish whenever she yelled, "Tommmmy!"
1. Tommy - The guy can dress in ANY color; green, red, white, or black. The clothing he wears looks cool, yet is comfortable enough to perform some cool moves. He looks even more slick now in a shirt and tie. Bonus points for cutting his hair. Remember in the Zeo episodes, "There's No Business Like Show Business" Pts. 1-3? Pony tail, suit, and tie? Bad combo.

Just for you ABC KIDS viewers, there are pre-emptions for the next two weeks. You all probably won't be seeing the finale of Dino Thunder until February if they continue the pre-emptions. Put in only showing ONE episode a week now, which makes for the long wait. But hey, SPD is only around the corner!
A mistake from two weeks ago when I mentioned about villain fights. There have been tons, including Zeltrax vs. Evil Trent. How foolish of me! Thanks to SolarGalaxy18 for the heads up.
